BIOGRAPHY

James specialises in Terrorism and Counter Terrorism and delivers engaging teaching content at undergraduate and postgraduate within Liverpool John Moores University, where he leads the Terrorism and Law Enforcement Studies programme. James’ teaching centres around the ideological dimensions of terrorism as well as how colonisation has created antiWestern rhetoric. James does this by focussing on the conditions that have given rise to extremist hate and the conflicts that continue to influence political violence globally. A theme across James’ teaching is the distension between terrorist and freedom fighter, which develops student critical and evidence-based thinking around the most complex issues related to terrorism. James’ commitment to teaching has been recognised when being awarded Inspiring Teacher at the Liverpool John Moores University Teaching Excellence Awards 2026 as well as receiving nominations for Enhancing the Learning Experience and Rising Star (2025).

James also contributes to the wider terrorism and counterterrorism community as host of the Policing Conversation podcast where he has discussed topics such as radicalisation, radical Islam, right wing extremism and the assessment of the American War on Terror. James’ writing provides readers with an analysis of the post 9/11 landscape, with a particular focus on how counterterrorism policy has driven the expansion of immigration enforcement in the United States. James is currently working on the War on Terror and Prevent within a new upcoming book called Counterterrorism and Intelligence: The UK Perspective. James is currently in the process of completing his Doctorate in Education where he is researching the development of manosphere ideology and how this impacts young men during their educational development.

James currently hosts the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies Podcast called "The Policing Conversation" which provides an insight into the different avenues Policing and Criminal Justice offers to future practitioners. On this podcast there is a range of guests from all area of the Criminal Justice System. Guests include: Clarence Augustus (Gus) Martin, Ph.D, Professor Lawrence Sherman, Guardian Reporter Jason Burke, Chief Constable of Merseyside Police Serena Kennedy and many more.

James has gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) as well as my Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). This professional development and the knowledge gained from these qualifications allowed James to interact with every learning style and differentiate within his lessons. James focuses his sessions on a student centred learning environment.

The main area of focus was with foreign national prisoners as well as British national prisoners. Assisting them pastorally and providing them with positive methods in order to understand the English language around the prison environment and prepare for life in the community. James has liaised with vulnerable prisoners providing them with the appropriate education that was needed within the prison establishment. Furthermore, James conducted employability interviews with prisoners a the end of their current sentence in order to create a pathway into employment and steer them way from future reoffending.

James has contributed to many different educational teaching journeys in order to develop into the best possible practitioner.
