BIOGRAPHY

Erin is an early career technician in Pharmacy and Chemistry, specifically in the roles of teaching and analytical chemistry. They studied at Liverpool John Moores university in Applied Chemistry, graduating with a 2.2 BSc (Hons) in 2022. The course focused mostly on organic synthetic and analytical chemistry. Her dissertation focussed mostly on organic synthesis, by altering the wavelength at which a potential drug, based off the parent molecule methylene blue, would absorb and emit radiation. They were able to successfully move the emitted wavelength downrange into the purple and eventually ultraviolet range, however the resulting compound would not be viable as a drug due to a lack of bioavailaility.

After graduation, they began their careeer in chemistry as a quality control analyst for a pharmaceutical company in the HPLC division. This allowed her to develop a highly specialised skill set in solid/liquid and liquid/liquid sample preparation, and also allowed them to hone their skills in troubleshooting and method development whilst using HPLC.

Using this as a stepping stone, she became a science technician at LJMU in October 2024, where she was quickly able to learn the ropes of many more analytical instruments. Using their experience demonstrating the equipment during undergraduate classes, they have been able to hone their skills in several different disciplines of analytical chemistry, becoming the first point of contact for the HPLC suite, GC-FID, FAAS, ICP-OES, FTIR and UV-VIS, as well as the second contact for the GC-MS (single quadrupole), GC-MS/MS (triple quadrupole), GC-MS with headspace sampling and ICP-MS.

Erin is hoping to become more involved with research in the future, and hope to support some larger scale research projects with their broad knowledge of sample preparation and wet and analytical chemistry.
