BIOGRAPHY
Mehrdad Ameri Vamkani is a civil engineering researcher and professionally registered engineer whose work bridges academic research and industrial practice, with particular interests in sustainable construction materials, infrastructure rehabilitation, circular economy and resilient urban infrastructure. His experience spans laboratory research, construction delivery, trenchless technology, wastewater asset management and materials research and development.
Before and alongside his academic research, Mehrdad developed substantial industry experience in the construction and wastewater sectors. As a Site Engineer, he contributed to a €46 million inspection and rehabilitation programme for the Isfahan sewer network, involving more than 200 km of CCTV inspection and cleaning, flow monitoring, manhole rehabilitation and UV-CIPP trenchless lining. His responsibilities included CCTV condition assessment using WRC/MSCC5, rehabilitation planning, liner recommendations, quality assurance procedures and the adaptation of international rehabilitation technologies to local infrastructure conditions. His industrial materials work has subsequently expanded into R&D for sustainable sewer rehabilitation, including the development and local production of UV-cured fibreglass/polymer liners, life-cycle and cost-benefit assessment, materials selection and experimental performance evaluation.
At Liverpool John Moores University, Mehrdad has worked on interdisciplinary research concerning bio-modified and self-healing geopolymer concrete, zero-cement materials, sewer rehabilitation and circular construction materials. His work has investigated the use of Shewanella bacteria to enhance acid resistance, durability and crack-sealing performance of geopolymer materials for aggressive sewer environments, supported by mechanical testing and advanced material characterisation, including XRD and SEM. He has also contributed to research examining how Liverpool City Region waste streams, including construction and demolition waste, excavated soils, waste wood, sewage sludge and other local resources, can be transformed into low-carbon construction materials using waste audits, supply-chain modelling, life-cycle assessment and total-cost-of-ownership analysis. His wider LJMU research involvement includes Realising Net-Zero Liverpool, Smart Shelters & Sustainable Futures – Maharashtra’s Bio-Concrete Initiative, the Horizon Europe MSCA Alternative Biomineralisation for Concrete without Cement (ABioC) project, and research into Nature-based Solutions for grey-green infrastructure. His work has resulted in peer-reviewed publications covering bio-enhanced geopolymers, self-healing materials, recycled aggregates and sustainable construction materials.
Mehrdad holds an MEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Bath and is an Incorporated Engineer and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (IEng MICE). He is also professionally engaged with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and the UK Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT).
